confusing. I can't picture myself with a career. I think to myself "Is physical therapy right for me?" And I can't see myself doing it. Sitting in an office or exam room, moving peoples' limbs around for them and giving them excersizes to do. Filling out charts. Billing insurance companies. I just don't care about that. I'm running out of time to have these kinds of thoughts. I'm a junior in college now and if I wait much longer to decide what I want to be when I grow up, I'll be a 28 year old undergrad. I don't know what to do.
I love activism. And working for change. But can I make a career out of that? I could work for UNICEF or Amnesty International or a congressman or something. I dunno. I love photography, too. I took a test at the Career Services center at school and it said my number one job would be a photographer. In every aspect. Across the board. That has to count for something, right? And I think I have sort of a knack for it. I've always been creative and artistic and expressive. And I could go into photojournalism and work on exposing issues and causes from around the world.
All of these ideas sound great but I'm running out of time. And money. So...
I just can't be a physical therapist. I refuse to do something with my life that I don't give a damn about. I guess that's the only thing I'm resolved about.

| Dissent |
[Thursday, May 31, 2007 // ] |
Some woman called into the radio this morning and I happened to be listening on my way to school, and she was easily the most ignorant person I've ever heard speak. She was saying how she's tired of American's being Anti-American and how people speak out against the war, that "they don't even know," and that they should just keep their thoughts to themselves. She then went on to say that this kind of behavior was unsupportive of the troops, because they were fighting for our freedom.
Dissent is Patriotic, people. Standing up and questioning what's being done on the World Stage in the name is America is patriotic. Suggesting people just keep their opinions to themselves is anti-American. America is based on the freedom to express and practice one's beliefs. Voting is a form of expressing one's opinion. I ask that woman and those who think like her, is voting anti-American? When Martin Luther King spoke out against the lack of Civil Rights in this country, was that anti-American? When women spoke up to earn their right to vote, was that anti-American? Anti-American would be sitting back, letting leaders make all decisions without any argument, and accepting everything that is done in the name of America.
Secondly, being against the war is not the same as being against the troops. People tend to think that people who protest the war or question the war are against the troops or the military. One of the many reasons I am against this war is because of my support for the troops. I don't want my fellow Americans dying for no real reason and no real cause. This month has been the deadliest for American troops, so don't you think that sitting back and letting Americans die in record numbers without any dissent would be anti-American? Shouldn't we be asking why so many have perished in a war with no real goals or plan? Shouldn't we, out of respect for the men and women willing to fight for this country and protect us, do what we can to protect them?
I can only say that I hope there aren't many people who think the way that she does. She says they're fighting for our freedom, but if we exercise that freedom in questioning the war, she labels us anti-American. Dissent is American. Exercising one's freedom is American, and if that means questioning authority and their motives, then so be it.
